Let each day be your masterpiece

Before I became a Christian, this phrase "Let each day be your masterpiece" has been one of my favourite quotes.

I like the way life is seen as a piece of work or art in which each day is our masterpiece. We strive to do our best for our family, the people around us, the society and for ourselves.

I like to give of my best to each day of my life. I love life with all its mysteries and beauties. I strive to do my best in whatever I do. Not sure whether it is because I am some kind of a perfectionist, or this is a part of my character trait.

After I became a Christian, this phrase takes on a new meaning as I strive to live in God's strength for His glory and the benefit of His people.

I hope to live each day to the best of my ability and present it as a masterpiece to God Who creates me, gives me life and gives me the grace and strength to live for Him.

I seek our Lord Jesus Christ daily to know Him and how best I can serve Him. I try to do my best daily in whatever I am called to do. I do all things joyfully as unto the Lord. In my difficulties and struggles, I cast myself upon our Lord and look to Him for grace to cope.

I try to love God and the people around me to the best ability I can. I know I failed many times but with God's grace, I will keep trying. I am learning to cherish the people around me and reflect God's love in my relationship with them. I pray that others may see God's love and grace in my life, my works, my relationship with them, etc. And they will know a little that God is my Creator and I am one of His masterpieces :-)

I thank God for the pleasant experience in my part-time job assignment recently. On the last day of my work on Tuesday, I made some of these bookmarks for my colleagues with this phrase.

JQ likes them very much. She has never seen this phrase before but she said she is beginning to like it very much.

JQ emailed me 2 days ago. She said one of my bookmarks is already sleeping in one of her books. And she is masterpiecing her days :-)

Glad that this phrase is having an impact in her young life :-)

I thank God that He is my help and strength daily. Though I have many struggles with severe depressive episodes in the past and even now I am still learning to manage this bipolar disorder (manic - depressive illness), I know God is with me daily. He is my help and strength.

Hi, if you are interested to make some of these bookmarks for yourself or your friends, you can download some Free Bookmark Templates from my "Homemade Crafts and Gifts" blog and I shared some free tips there as well on how to make them :-)

Enjoying God's creations in many wonderful ways

Thank God that while recovering from my last relapse of depression end of last year, I was able to do a lot of brisk walkings around the neighbourhood of my home as well as at some beach.

Through regular brisk walkings, it has helped to strengthen my body and mind. Providentially, I also picked up photography. I saw many beautiful flowers and plants while walking in the neighbourhood of my home. Photography allows me to express the creative side of me just as writing allows me to express my thoughts, feelings and emotions.

I also love to go to the beach and watch the sea and waves. Somehow the waves has a soothing effect on me. It reminded me of the majesty of God and His power in creating all things, and His sovereignty in ordering all His creations for His glory. I am reminded of God's unchangeable and unfailing love to His beloved people who are saved by grace through the cleansing of the precious blood of His only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

What a comfort it is to remember that God who created all things, Who has redeemed me from sins and eternal condemnation, continues to watch over me through all the changing scenes of life. And nothing will ever separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. How blessed it is to belong to Him!

The Precious Trial

Today, I read the following encouraging portion from a small tract entitled "Precious Things" by M. Luther Hux. It brought so much comfort and encouragement to me to remember afresh that the trials of our faith is sent by our Lord out of His love and for our good that our faith may be strengthened. As I consider the many fiery trials I have experienced ever since I became a Christian, I am enabled once again to see things from another perspective. Thank God for those trials that purged me of my dross, thrown me upon our Lord and enable me to know His love and faithfulness experientially!

The following is taken from "Precious Trial" of "Precious Things":

'The "precious faith" which we considered first must now be tried. Because they are many counterfeits of the genuine faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, our faith must go through the fires of testing that we may know whether it is true or false, and that also in the fiery trial it may be freed from the impurities by reason of the corruption of the flesh and strengthened.

The Scripture calls this trial of the believers faith "precious".

"That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto the praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ" (I peter 1:7).
From this verse observe what the apostle intends we should know about the many and painful trials which a Christian is to face all during his earthly pilgrimage -

It is a trial. It is a trial which every believer must face. It is a trial of the believer's faith. It is a precious trial. It is a trial of more value than perishing gold. It is a fiery trial. It is a trial which will last until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a trial of your faith whose outcome will be glorious - providing you are found to be a true believer in Him and not merely a dead professor.

It is a wonderful consolation to know that while passing through the manifold trials of this life that they are appointed of Him out of love and for a good end. They are a help and not a hindrance. They cut off pride and bring us to His feet and keep us there. They sweeten the promises and enliven the prayer. They have a tendency to lift our affections from the temporal to the eternal and make us sensitive of the sanctifying power of Christ in every cross we are called to bear. If we possess the faith which is from above we shall say with William Cowper:
Did I meet no trials here-
No chastisement by the way-
Might I not with reason fear
I should prove a castaway?
Bastards may escape the rod,
Sunk in earthly, vain delight;
But the true-born child of God
Must not-would not, if he might.
You may have wondered why you had so many trials since you first trusted the Lord. Well, there is an answer for that. You have these troubles come to you to try your faith. How would you know you were a Christian except that you have been tried? Surrounded on every hand as you are by that which is false and hearing the empty claims of deceived church-members, how can you be sure you are a true believer in the Lord Jesus Christ?

That faith, if it be a true saving faith, if it is a heavenly and not just a temporary, a stony ground faith, that is the faith that overcomes the world (1 John 5:4), and that faith is going to stand whatever fiery trial that the Lord has appointed, or Satan or the world may bring upon you. And when you come through that, you are going to be a better Christian. That trial, dear friend, while certainly not pleasant to the flesh, will prove more valuable to you than the gold of the world that must pass away. What can be more valuable than to have the blessed assurance that God is your heavenly Father, Christ is your Lord, the Holy Spirit is your Comforter, and heaven is your home? The reproach of Christ was reckoned by Moses to be greater riches than all the treasure of Egypt. Why? Because he had true faith. His faith stood the test when it was tried as all true faith will.

May the Lord grant us grace that we may welcome the precious trial when it comes realizing that it will reveal to us whether or not we have the faith that endures all things for His sake to the end - the faith which will not be ashamed to praise Him before a menacing world, that faith which will be found to the honour and glory of Him when He appears the second time.'

CH Spurgeon also preached a very encouraging sermon on the usefulness of Trials and Afflictions entitled "Sweet Uses of Adversity". This is one of my favourite sermons too :-)

God's unchanging love

I was re-reading the following from CH Spurgeon's Morning and Evening and much encouraged by the reminder of God's unchanging love:

"Thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation. Psalm 91:9

The Israelites in the wilderness were continually exposed to change. Whenever the pillar stayed its motion, the tents were pitched; but tomorrow, ere the morning sun had risen, the trumpet sounded, the ark was in motion, and the fiery, cloudy pillar was leading the way through the narrow defiles of the mountain, up the hillside, or along the arid waste of the wilderness. They had scarcely time to rest a little before they heard the sound of "Away! this is not your rest; you must still be onward journeying towards Canaan!" They were never long in one place. Even wells and palm trees could not detain them. Yet they had an abiding home in their God, His cloudy pillar was their roof-tree, and its flame by night their household fire. They must go onward from place to place, continually changing, never having time to settle, and to say, "Now we are secure; in this place we shall dwell." "Yet," says Moses, "though we are always changing, Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place throughout all generations." The Christian knows no change with regard to God. He may be rich today and poor tomorrow; he may be sickly today and well tomorrow; he may be in happiness today, tomorrow he may be distressed—but there is no change with regard to his relationship to God. If He loved me yesterday, He loves me today. My unmoving mansion of rest is my blessed Lord. Let prospects be blighted; let hopes be blasted; let joy be withered; let mildews destroy everything; I have lost nothing of what I have in God. He is "my strong habitation whereunto I can continually resort." I am a pilgrim in the world, but at home in my God. In the earth I wander, but in God I dwell in a quiet habitation."

How true it is that for Christians, we know no change with regard to God. We may be rich today and poor tomorrow; we may be sickly today and well tomorrow; we may be in happiness today, tomorrow he may be distressed—but there is no change with regard to our relationship to God. If He loved us yesterday, He loves us today. Our unmoving mansion of rest is our blessed Lord. What a comfort to me through all the changing scenes of life!

God moves in a mysterious way

"Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy." 1 Peter 4:12-13

Whenever we go through trials in our life, whether it be spiritual, mental or physical, we can have comfort and assurance from God's Words that they happened for a purpose. In our modern society, the health and wealth gospel has corrupted many churches. Some preachers preached that once you believe in Christ, all your problems will go away, all your sicknesses will be healed, and you will never suffer nor fall sick.

This is clearly contrary to the Word of God. God never promised that we will live a life free from troubles and illnesses once we become a Christian. But He promised to be with us and that He will never leave us nor forsake us. He promised that He is working all things for His glory and our good. We may not always see it this way when we are going through our fiery trials, but whenever we look back months and years later, we will see the wisdom and the goodness of God even in our most severe trials. God sustained and preserved us in them, sanctified us and draw us nearer to Him. In 1 Peter 4:12-13 quoted above, God warns us not to think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try us, as though some strange thing happened unto us. And in Acts 14:22, Paul and the other disciples visited the believers at Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, "Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God."

We are not to think it strange when we go through trials or afflictions but rather to remember that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. God will be with us to give us the grace to go through these trials.

1 Peter Chapter 1:6-8
6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

We will triumph over these trials and afflictions as the Lord works His grace in our souls, strengthening our faith in Him, our hope in Him, and our love for Him. So that we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us. And nothing shall ever separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:37-39
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Rev John J Murray made the following comment and quoted these encouraging portions from some poems in a small booklet written by him entitled "Behind a Frowning Providence" :

"When we set off on the Christian pathway we do not know much about our true selves. It is even possible to enter the Christian ministry without much knowledge of the deceitfulness of the heart. 'We are on too good terms with ourselves', said Dr Lloyd-Jones. We pray sincerely for growth in grace, for increase in faith, but the answer comes in a way we did not expect. John Newton was one who made the painful discovery.

The following are taken from 'Prayer Answered by Crosses' by John Newton, 'God Moves in a Mysterious Way' by William Cowper, 'The Weaver' and 'Last Words' (a poem inspired by the letters and last words of Samuel Rutherford) by Mrs A. R. Cousin:

I asked the Lord that I might grow
In faith and love and every grace,
Might more of his salvation know,
And seek more earnestly his face.

'Twas he who taught me thus to pray;
And he, I trust, has answered prayer;
But it has been in such a way
As almost drove me to despair

I hoped that, in some favoured hour,
At once, he'd answer my request,
And by his love's constraining power
Subdue my sins, and give me rest.

Instead of this, he made me feel
The hidden evils of my heart,
And let the angry powers of hell
Assault my soul in every part.

Yea, more, with his own hand he seemed
Intent to aggravate my woe
Crossed all the fair designs I schemed,
Blasted my gourds, and laid me low.

Lord, why is this? I trembling cried;
Wilt thou pursue this worm to death?
This is the way, the Lord replied
I answer prayer for grace and faith.

These inward trials I now employ
From self and pride to set thee free,
And break thy schemes of earthly joy,
That thou may'st seek thy all in me.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust in His grace,
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sovereign wills.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be flower.

Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the weaver's skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern he has planned.

Deep waters cross'd life pathway
The Hedge of thorns was sharp;
Now these lie all behind me;
Oh! For a well-tuned harp!

Soon shall the cup of blessing
Wash down earth's bitterest woes;
Soon shall the desert brier
Break into Eden's rose.

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

RC Sproul's lecture on the General Epistles from his series on "Dust to glory" which was shown during my church's Adult Bible Class last Lord's day was very encouraging.

James encouraged the believers who were enduring trials and tribulations:

James 1:2-4
2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

James encouraged those who lack wisdom to ask of God:

James 1:5-7
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Sproul said that the trials we experienced in our lives are tests in which God brings us to higher level of sanctification. The way we are to face these trials is with wisdom. Wisdom is how to live a godly life - devoted to God. True faith will always work itself in term of obedience.

The major theme of 1st and 2nd Peter is similar - encouragement to Christians in their sufferings and afflictions. Sproul said that the common phenomena is the prosperity gospel or the health and wealth gospel which says that come to Jesus Christ and all your problems will go away. Name it and claim it! And how the multitude of people embrace it! Sproul exclaimed, how can people be fooled by it! Being in affliction, pain and persecution is in many pages of the Bible. The believers were in prison, living in exile and participating in the humiliation of Christ.

Sproul said the refining fire is not to destroy us. God is using our pain for our sanctification so that we may learn to look to Him for comfort and consolation. Though seemingly unbearable, it is not futile but it has an eternal purpose. May God gives us the grace to look to Him in our trials and afflictions in this world knowing that God is working it for our sanctification and other goods.

When we are tried, we shall come forth as gold.

"But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." Job 23:10
