Dear Readers,
Thanks for stopping by.
Sometimes our loved ones or friends may be in a crisis and have difficulty processing information. At such a time, we can try to talk to the person, especially if he/she is dealing with mental illness, as below:
How should I talk to a person in crisis?
- Stay calm. Listen carefully and show that you really care.
- Talk slowly, clearly and use reassuring tones.
- Realize you may have trouble communicating with the sufferer. Ask simple questions. Repeat them if necessary, using the same words each time.
- Show them you care by saying “I’m here. I care. I want to help. How can I help you?”
- Avoid jumping to a conclusion or solution.
- Don’t say, “Snap out of it,” “Get over it,” or “Stop acting crazy.”
- Don’t take the sufferer’s actions or hurtful words personally.
- Suggest seeking medical help if the person is suicidal or unable to cope.
Hope the above will be helpful.
